How To Clean and Store Your Godzilla Action Figures Collection
If you collect Godzilla action figures, you want to make sure that you keep them in tip-top shape. Here's a guide to cleaning and storing your collection properly, so it stays as good as new.
Cleaning
If you display any of your figures out of their boxes, they will get dirty and need cleaning. Even figures displayed in their packaging get dirty from time to time. But you have to make sure you clean them without causing any damage to the finish or any moving parts.
You can use plain water, or water and a gentle liquid soap. If the figure has joints, or is battery powered, do not dunk or soak it in water or hold it under the tap. Use a toothbrush or a cloth to wipe it down and get into small areas that may hold dirt and dust. Make sure you dry it off completely, because water left to sit will end up causing damage. Towel it off, then shake it to get all the water out and let it sit for a few hours if you're going to put it away in storage or in a box. Do not use a hair dryer! If it's too hot, you can melt the plastic. If you have a hair dryer with a cool setting, you're probably safe.
To clean packaging, use a dry cloth. You can get cloths that are meant for picking up dust, or use a microfiber-type dusting brush. In a pinch you can use canned air, like the kind you get for cleaning your computer keyboard.
Storing
For long term storage, make sure you have the proper containers. Plastic storage bins and other rigid containers work well, as they can be stacked and the contents won't get crushed if you have to put other things on top. If you must use cardboard, just make sure it is really sturdy so that the sides or tops don't get crushed. It's worth buying cardboard storage boxes rather than using old boxes for this reason.
Put any loose action figures in plastic bags or bubble wrap and place them on the bottom of the bin, and then set any packaged ones on top. This helps keep the packaging from any dents or scuffs. If things move around a lot when you pick up the box, stuff it with packing material, or use old clothes or towels to create a snugger fit.
If you are storing carded action figures that haven't been opened, stack them flat, not on their side. This helps prevent the card from getting bent or creased.
Don't forget to label all of your boxes in detail! Make a list of each figure and stick it to the outside of the box, so that when you need one you will know exactly where it is.
Where to store them
Find a cool, dry place. This is important! Too many people store their action figures in the basement, and run the risk of humidity and dampness seeping in and ruining the packaging. The garage is also not a good place, especially if you have extreme seasonal changes in weather. You want a place where the temperature stays fairly steady.
