How To Start Collecting Godzilla Action Figures
If you're a monster movie fan, chances are you have a special place in your heart for Godzilla. The lovable Japanese fire-breather has been stomping and roaring across the big and small screens since the 1950's. There's no shortage of Godzilla action figures out there, but if you're serious about collecting then you need to do some research. This article will help you get started.
First, you need to have at least a basic understanding of Godzilla history. This is one lizard who's had his share of extreme makeovers! Each era saw Godzilla looking different, so you want to have a look and see which version of him you prefer. Early versions of Godzilla look more threatening and fierce, while later ones are more heroic. Also, his original coloring is grey and very scaly, while more current versions portray him as more of a greenish color.
Once you know what Godzilla you prefer, it's time to decide if you want to collect all the different versions or the Godzilla action figures of one era in particular. You could make an impressive collection either way, as there are tons of action figures to choose from no matter what era or style you're interested in. If you want a collection that spans all of Godzilla's incarnations, pick one or two action figures from each era so you have an even representation.
You may also choose to ignore eras and go for a certain type of collection. Godzilla action figures come in all sorts of forms. You could build a collection of die-cast figures, or vinyl, or plastic. You could choose by size also, from small mini-figurines to larger scale models. You could even collect stuffed Godzillas!
Now, consider whether you want to concentrate just on Godzilla, or include his many foes. Godzilla has fought many enemies, such as Mothra, Rodan, Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla...and even King Kong! There are tons of enemies to choose from, and you could build a good collection using them. If you're a movie fan, consider building a collection based on the series and have each battle represented.
Now, how to go about finding Godzilla action figures that are worthy of collecting?
Science fiction and comic book conventions are good places to start, as they are full of people who also collect and know what they are talking about. Comic bookstores in your city are good sources also, as staff generally has a good working knowledge of collectibles and, even if they don't carry Godzilla figures will likely be able to recommend other places that do.
Online, places like Ebay have tons of stuff and are a good source for collectors. Also look for sci-fi toy sites and/or horror toy sites and forums where collectors and fans can talk and exchange information.
Once you start collecting Godzilla action figures, it's hard to stop! The most important thing, of course, is to have fun with it...and make sure you create a lot of room, because chances are you're going to need it.
